EAP 1 courses at CCEL are for students seeking to prepare for future academic study.

Course Focus: Developing academic English skills essential for success at university.

Delivery: Available both in-class and online (NZQA-approved for offshore students).

Course Length

12 weeks

Full time – 20 hours + 5 hours per week of Independent Learning

Levels Available

Intermediate to Advanced
(Classes may be mixed levels depending on student numbers.)

Minimum Entry Levels

IELTS 5.0 or equivalent

What You Will Learn

  • Enhance your English grammar and academic vocabulary.
  • Improve your reading speed and understanding at a higher level.
  • Develop your writing skills for essays and exams.
  • Enhance your listening skills, including understanding lectures and tutorials.
  • Practise speaking and improve your pronunciation in various academic situations.

Academic Skills

  • Deliver clear and informative presentations.
  • Use technology commonly used in tertiary studies.
  • Learn essay writing and exam techniques.
  • Develop note-taking skills.
  • Develop study skills, including planning study timetables, working on group projects, and using library resources.

Exam Preparation

  • Prepare for internationally recognised exams.
  • Acquire strategies and skills for exam success.
  • Get additional support and feedback as part of exam practice.

Placement

Minimum entry levels apply (IELTS 5.0 or equivalent). Placement depends on level assessment, which can be completed overseas before arriving in New Zealand.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the course, ensuring ongoing progress.

Upon completing EAP 1, you’ll be ready to:

  • Write well-organised essays and exam answers with confidence.
  • Deliver clear and interesting presentations.
  • Master note-taking during lectures.
  • Speak confidently on various academic topics.

Completing EAP 1 leads to direct entry to UCIC Diploma in University Studies (DipUS) or Certificate in Foundation Studies. It can also set the stage for progression to EAP 2 without the need for further testing.
