DELTA

Delta (Diploma of English Language Teaching to Adults) is an internationally recognised qualification for more experienced English language teachers. It is designed to allow experienced teachers to acquire new insights and a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of ELT.

KEY INFORMATION

Delta is delivered in a 3-module format. Candidates can take any or all of the three modules, in any order – it’s not compulsory to take all three modules.  

Module 1 (Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources for Teaching)

  • theoretical perspectives on language acquisition and language teaching
  • different approaches and methodologies including current developments
  • language systems and learners’ linguistic problems
  • language skills and learner problems
  • resources, materials and reference sources for language learning
  • key concepts and terminology related to assessment.

Module 2 (Developing Professional Practice)

  • working with language learners in a variety of learning contexts
  • preparation for teaching learners of English
  • evaluation, selection and use of resources and materials for teaching purposes
  • managing and supporting learning
  • evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching
  • observation and evaluation of other teachers’ lessons
  • professionalism and professional development.

Module 3 (Extending Practice & ELT Specialism)

  • a chosen specialist area ( EAP, ESP, Business English etc )
  • curriculum and syllabus design principles
  • different types of syllabus
  • approaches to needs analysis
  • course design and evaluation
  • assessment of learners.

200 learning hours, made up of:

  • 30 hours of input
  • 5 hours each candidate of tutorials
  • 165 hours of reading and research and assignment preparation

Delta 2011

In 2011 Delta modules will be made up of a combination of self-study/online support and face-to-face tuition: 

Module 1 2011

  • 2 weeks self-study/online support: 12 September - 23 September
  • 8 weeks face-to-face tuition: 26 September - 18 November (Mondays & Tuesdays)
  • 2 weeks study break/online support: 21 November - 6 December
  • Cambridge exam: 7 December

Module 2 2011

  • 2 weeks self-study/online support: 12 Sepetember - 23 September
  • 8 weeks face-to-face tuition: 26 September - 18 November (Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays)
  • Cambridge assessed lesson: 14 November - 18 November

Module 3 2011

  • 12 weeks self-study/online support: 14 March - 3 June
  • Cambridge submission date: 6 June

Course costs (including GST)

Module 1         NZD 1,200 + 240 exam fees

Module 2         NZD 3,200 + 280 exam fees

Module 3         NZD 1,200 + 180 exam fees

A 10% course fee deposit will be required on acceptance onto any module, with the balance due before the start of the module. Candidates will not be permitted to start a module unless course fees are paid in full.

Candidates should anticipate buying books for their own use probably to a value of approximately NZD 200. A book list will be provided after acceptance onto the course.

Entry criteria

Applicants should:

  • Have an initial teaching qualification, such as CELTA or equivalent. This qualification should include a teaching practice component
  • Have 2 years’ adult ESOL teaching experience
  • Have a language level equivalent to IELTS 8 (or equivalent)
